18AugWhere is The Only Place That Success Comes Before Work?

Posted on 18/08/2014 by Nine2Three

Success – what is it and how do you know when you have achieved it?  Impossible to give a standard answer because success is something different, to everyone.

If you have a business, perhaps success to you means drawing a regular wage, or reducing your working hours from 60 to 40, or landing that big contract.

If you are an individual, then perhaps success for you is seeing your children achieve, or living in the moment of a happy family, or finding work within the area you are passionate about or having your salary raised to a certain level.

What ever your dreams of success are, we all need to do the same thing  to reach our personal high –work hard.

That’s right. I don’t believe in any short cuts. Sure you can get lucky – be in the right pace at the right time, be ready when the big opportunity comes your way, but generally it is all about how hard you work.

My father taught me very early in life to respond to those that say ‘ you are so lucky’ with  - ‘yes, it’s funny;  the harder I work, the luckier I get’ !

When I think about my personal ethos of going at everything 110%, I know how often I feel burnt out. Ultimately though, I know I will rarely  fail, because I will work so hard, that it is inevitable that the outcome will be positive, or at least heading in that direction!

Sure, not everything goes my way. I loose deals, bad stuff happens, but on average I would achieve a higher percentage of what I set out to accomplish. I’m not that smart, or talented or gifted – I just work hard.

It’s not just about business either. Facing an artificial hip at the very young age of 38, with a new hip, that I was told, in no uncertain terms, would never run, jump, hop, skip or do aerobics, I climbed the Grand High Tops in the Warrumbungle’s and  now dance four times a week .I have worked very hard to achieve this. There was no way an artificial hip was going to slow me down.

I see people daily, who have lost their jobs through redundancy. Applying for roles, these unfortunates receive many knock backs. Many give up and try small business, change careers or simply join the ranks of the unemployed. But I see that those that eventually achieve and return to the workforce in the same capacity as they left, never give up. They send out resume after resume and although demoralised and low, keep at the process. Chip, chip, chip away.

The same with business development and sales candidates. The most successful, stick to their process, even if the process is boring and seems to be stagnating. They work at it, refine it, and continue to chase that elusive lead. Chip, chip, chip away.

Same with business owners. In my many years in small business, I have seen businesses come and go, but the ones that are still around, have not really changed their core offering. Again, they have refined it, worked on it and made their business stronger over the years that they have … chip, chip, chipped away at it.

So what ever you want to do in life; have a more successful business, be a better parent, get the dream job or simply be happy – work at it.

You get out, what you put in.

Oh, and where does Success come before Work?  Only in the dictionary.

Dictionary is the only place that success comes before work. Hard work is the price we must pay for success. I think you can accomplish anything if you're willing to pay the price.
