29JanSmart Staffing for the SME Business

Posted on 29/01/2015 by Nine2Three

Think about it. Big business have pipelines of workers that they develop and manage, so there is always a flow of employees to keep the business going. They develop multi-generational  workplaces, so there is a balance of staff who are emerging, mid term, and exiting. This constant management is called Human Capital Management, because people are an asset.

Thinking about your team members as an asset makes you look at them in a new light. Yes, they have a worth, should sit on the balance sheet, but you do not control them. They walk out of your door every evening and you simply hope they return the next day.

Small business needs to start being less reactive and more proactive with its staffing models in order to grow and develop.

Managing a recruitment company for so many years, we see the SME reactive activity all the time. ‘My employee has just told me that she is leaving’  ‘ I need a replacement right now – yesterday in fact’!

If small business could take the time to look at their staffing model and think about the loss of staff and how to better manage it, they would save dollars lost in downtime, lost custom and recruitment costs.

Nine2Three has developed our N2T Grad Plan to assist small business to develop pipelines of workers with a minimum of fuss and to be highly cost effective.

It is about accessing a current university student who is studying your industry at University level and having them work as a fully managed employee in your business on a part-time basis while they study.

‘Fully managed’ means that you do not need to employ them, you do not need to worry about their super, you do not need to increase your workers compensation, or include them on your public liability or professional indemnity insurance. We do all of that for you. We are a contractor to your business and all you pay is a low hourly rate, and only when they work! No upfront recruitment fees.

So this smart, savvy, digital native, will come to your business part time for maybe two or three years. They will learn your business, be able to cover for other staff in uni break time, and bring all their latest learning to your business.

As an on-hired Nine2Three worker, you can increase the workload as needed or decrease and even walk away with only one hours notice.

After a few years, your business may want to offer this graduate their first entry level job, after all, they have been trained by you and know your business really well. Or perhaps you do not want to take them on – the choice is yours!

However, you are creating a smart pipeline of young workers,  that can grow and develop with your business, relieve staff in busy times or annual leave breaks and know their way around a computer like they were born with it!
