Let me tell you a story.
 
Once upon a time, a business owner started a business without any knowledge of human resources or how the Australian workplace laws work. He employed staff and paid them as he saw fit. He kept no records and had no agreements in writing.  It all seemed to work fine – he had plenty staff and would never have thought of spending the time or money to have a professional manage his HR.
 
One day one of the employees showed great initiative in researching their workplace conditions, made a few phone calls and discovered that she had been underpaid for many years. She went to her boss and demanded the money. She threatened her boss with lots of dire consequences if he did not pay up.
 
The boss agreed that he had done the wrong thing and was going to pay at the correct rate for a part time worker. However the worker said they were not part time, but casual which is a much higher rate attracting a 25% loading.
 
This difference in opinion equated to a large difference in payment.
