18FebGetting Your Foot in the Door

Posted on 18/02/2015 by Nine2Three

One of the hardest things when looking for a new role, or your first role, is getting that foot in the door. Often candidates say to us, if I could only get a chance, I know I would be able to do a great job!

It is very daunting when you are not receiving call backs for roles you are applying for.

Sometimes you need to think outside the box in order to get where you are wanting to go.

Finding out what makes resume’s stand out from the crowd and how to tailor your resume to the job advert is a good start. These are the types of activities that are targeted in career coaching.  However this can be an expensive option, so attending one of Nine2Three’s Re-Create your Career Workshops can be a more cost effective way to gain some insight.

Talking to people in your community can also be a great help. Don’t be afraid to tell people that you are looking for a job and ask if they know anyone who has jobs on offer.

Often roles are developed around interpersonal relationships and never actually get to the advertisement stage, because the company hired someone they knew, or someone who was recommended to them. Personal recommendation is very powerful.

Think about taking jobs that are not exactly what you are looking for right now, but might be in the right company, industry or will just give you that much needed local or current experience. We have always found that candidates who are flexible with what they will accept end up in the long run with better opportunities.

Also consider money versus future. By this we mean, you may be getting a high rate of pay working in the takeaway, but if you are trying to break into a professional environment, having this role on your resume does little to help you. However if you are able to work in an entry level position in a professional environment,  in a specific industry, or with a well respected firm, this will assist with your future to a much greater degree.

Whether you are a young person looking for your first role, or a mature age person returning to work after a break, you are not alone with your search.

Talk to all contacts, join industry bodies, attend networking functions, contact businesses direct and always watch your tone of voice and enthusiasm levels when speaking with people.

You never know where the next opportunity may come from – it is all about just getting that foot in the door!
