20JanSo You've Graduated – What now?

Posted on 20/01/2015 by Nine2Three

You have spent quite a few years working hard at university, gathering knowledge, learning skills and developing your professional life. Now comes the time to get a job, and it can be very daunting.

If you have graduated and have just started looking, I hate to tell you, but you are a bit behind the eight ball. However all is not lost and always remember that any rejection when looking for your first role is not personal.

If you have never worked before, you have little to recommend yourself except for your academic ability and your character. Use these to maximum effect in your resume.

If you have a credit or distinction average, make sure you highlight this not only in your resume, but in your cover letter as well. If you have been involved in clubs or university activities and they demonstrate your character, skills or leadership qualities, make sure that is included also.

Talk about any positions you have held in organisations, whether social, charitable or interest groups.  Show how your leadership skills, pro-activeness and interest have contributed to the organisation.

If you have worked in retail or hospitality while studying, utilise those capabilities that can be transferred to a professional setting in your resume. Don’t spend half a page on your skills with a cash register, but rather focus on customer service skills.

If you are cluey, you are going to think about all of this way before you graduate. Even during your first year at university.

While graduates will all apply for the same roles, armed with their degree, or degrees, every one will have at least one of those.

Some however may have their degree and one, two or three years experience, working part time in a professional environment. If they have an accounting degree, perhaps they have worked for a local accounting firm part time and in term breaks. IT students may have experience on a help desk, which they manned while studying. Marketing students might have worked with a variety of businesses as a digital marketing or straight marketing assistant.

These graduates not only have a degree, they have something else – experience.

So don’t wait till you graduate to start thinking about a job. Get ahead of the rest. Register for the Nine2Three database to be included in the N2T Grad Plan, and receive a paid job, working within your industry and a step up for your future career.
