20MayHelp your kids get a part time job!

Posted on 20/05/2015 by Nine2Three

Nine2Three now has over 8000 people registered on our database through out all areas of Sydney. Many are parents of young students starting or completing university or TAFE courses.

When youngsters complete their studies, they apply for entry level positions and come to their interviews armed with their qualification. The problem is they all have a qualification. Some may have their qualification from a better institution, or have a higher qualification or a distinction average. While others may hold only a basic qualification.

So how do these young people stand out from the crowd?

What can a young person do to try and place themselves ahead of the rest, when they come to apply for jobs?

One of the best things a student can do is to gain professional experience in their industry while they are still studying. Applying for internships, while a student is the first step.

Internships organised by a tertiary education facility are a highly valuable aspect of a student’s learning. Apart from the experience they will gain and the fact that they will be able to add this to their resume, the young worker will meet people who can be very important future contacts. Often an organisation will offer a part time role to an outstanding intern to keep them working in the business.

Even if you are not initially offered a role, there is nothing to stop you asking if they have any available work. Your child could offer holiday work to cover other staff who are away or casual work to lend a hand when ever needed.

In addition to partaking in internships while studying, young students should look at finding a part time role in the industry they are studying. This is invaluable when looking for a role in the future.

Working in MacDonald’s, hospitality or retail is all well and good for money and general life experience, but when you come to look for a professional role, it will give little weight to your application.

However if you turn up with your qualification and additionally can say ‘ I have two years experience working as a HR assistant’ or ‘marketing assistant’, or ‘in an accounting firm’, or ‘in an IT firm’ or what ever is relevant to you – it is very impressive. You will be streets ahead of those that only possess a qualification.

And that’s where parents, you can help. Show your students how to register on our website for casual and holiday work in professional offices. We have a section on our online form that asks the user to describe themselves. Simply tick ‘University student looking for casual and holiday work in your area of study’ and we will contact them, when our clients are looking for juniors!

Help your young people to be a step ahead!
