Nine2Three recently interviewed one of the many successful candidates, who have partaken in our N2T UGrad Plan, about the challenges in gaining graduate employment, and the benefits of having prior work experience in their field of study. Here is what she had to say:
“If you are a university student hoping to one day win your dream graduate job, I cannot begin to tell you how valuable prior work experience in your discipline will be for you. When competing for a graduate position, especially those with the most prestigious and sought-after employers, it is very important to make sure you stand out from the crowd. And I can tell you, the competition is tough.
Having been up against thousands of other applicants competing for graduate roles at a number of international companies, I know that my degree-related work and volunteer experience really impressed the interviewers and eventually led to my job offer.
The graduate employment climate is fierce, so you will want to have secured anything and everything impressive under your belt by the time you reach your final year of study. You can be extremely passionate about the graduate role you’re applying for, have great academic results and impeccable communication skills. But so will every other strong candidate.
Being able to proclaim any work experience that is related to your degree will send you miles ahead of the competition. For me, it not only made me stand out on paper (which got me through the initial short-list) but it was something I kept coming back to during the interviews as solid evidence of all the qualities graduate employers look for.
Among many other traits, graduate employers want candidates that are inquisitive, driven and enthusiastic to learn– a great indication of this is a candidate who has demonstrated initiative and already sought out practical learning experiences in their field even before graduating.
Getting the initial foot through the door is often the trickiest part of building a career. My best advice to any student is to not leave this to the last minute. Start now. If you graduate university already having secured as much experience and skills as you can, the world will be your oyster.”
