26JunCan someone work for me for only one hour per week?

Posted on 26/06/2017 by Nine2Three

Often micro businesses or start up businesses come to us asking if they can employ someone for a few hours only. Perhaps they are worried about the wages expense or worried that they only have a few hours work for the person. Most people when faced with this situation tend to not progress with the idea of getting an employee to work for them, but try to cram those few extra hours into their own work time and end up with no work/life balance and a suffering business!

Most awards have minimum hours and you are not entitled under the award to employ someone for less than those hours. This is to stop any exploitation of the worker, being called to work and not working enough hours to make it worth their while. You can employ someone for only two hours for example, but you have to pay them the minimum which might be four hours.

For example the Clerical Award provides for part time employees and casual employees to be employed a minimum of three consecutive hours in any one shift. That means that should your work finish at the 2.5 hour mark , you need to pay for three. (Except of course with 923|Recruitment & HR. Why?)

What the awards do not take into account is the flexible working parent role that is common in the 21st century. Often there is a person out there who would be happy to work a few hours in the week, as a break from home duties, or study.

That is why 923|Recruitment & HR instigated their collective agreement many years ago. We especially had total flexibility of hours written into the agreement, so an employee could choose to work less than minimum hours if they wished. Everyone has the right of refusal, so if completing a role for three hours on a Wednesday afternoon does not suit you, it may well suit someone else.

For small business owners out there struggling with ongoing work/life balance and wishing desperately that they had a extra helping hand – the cavalry have arrived! Call us to chat about your needs and you can bet that there is someone out there willing to help you with what ever hours you need.
