Recruiting in the current climate

There is a huge amount of activity in the recruitment sector at the moment with increase business confidence and a large number of employees looking to move onto greener pastures. During this type of market, businesses can often make the mistake of believing that they can take their time with candidates and delay their decision making. But remember that a ‘hot’ market means that recruiters may have trouble finding numerous quality candidates for skilled positions.

In many instances once candidates are found, employers are taking longer to make the decision and hire the candidate. The issue is not just related to Australia, as Joe Light outlines in his Wall Street Journal Digital Network article on 7 March “Nowadays, if managers speak to a really great candidate, instead of hiring him, they take it as an indication that there must be 10 even better people out there." But this is not always the case.

Some employers are missing out on really good candidates as they make them wait too long. By the time the employer has seen ten candidates and realised that the initial candidate they saw should have been their first choice, the candidate has accepted an offer from another company.

To ensure that you are managing your recruitment process in the best possible way prioritise your time to review the quality resumes you are receiving and interview your chosen candidates at the first available time. Then as soon as possible make a decision on which candidate suits your business, after seeking advice from your recruiter.

A good recruitment company will help you to manage the candidate relationship, keeping the candidates ‘warm’ while you make your decision. But a delay of too long can see the best candidates taken by more proactive businesses. Quality does not wait!
