17NovGot the Staffing Pyramid upside down?

Posted on 17/11/2014 by Nine2Three

Are you finding that your wages costs are blowing out? Once where you had many more junior staff, have they now all progressed and you are top heavy with supervisors?

Or do you have too many senior workers and not enough juniors?

Perhaps, in  2015,  it is time to undertake some HR consultation and re-address your staffing pyramid.

Having your staff aligned and using HR to push your business outcomes, means that you need to ensure that your staffing model is designed for optimum efficiency and cost reduction.

In a typical staffing pyramid, a business should have less senior workers at the top, who, while bringing the most skills to the business are also the highest cost factor.

Ask yourself the hard questions.

Are you paying executives and management staff to complete menial tasks?  By doing this you are probably dis-enabling your managers from reaching their management capabilities. Managers and Executives are a large cost centre, so ensure that you are using them in the best possible way and making the most of their expertise.

Is your business  too heavy with middle managers? Do you have workers that have progressed up to a management level, when your business can not really sustain such a big middle management level?

And who are your managers managing? What is the correct ratio for your business of supervisors to workers? What are your reporting lines?

Some businesses find that they actually have the opposite problem – where the business has too many lower skilled staff, who need supervision and management, but there is no one to do this.

HR and workforce consulting, looks at these issues and helps you consider how many staff your business effectively needs.

A New Year can be a great time to re-assess your staffing module and spend some time thinking about your Staffing Pyramid and whether over the years, it has lost its shape, or even totally inverted!
