14SepMaking Your Résumé Stand Out From The Crowd

Posted on 14/09/2015 by Nine2Three

Your résumé is one of your most important selling points when it comes to landing your next job. You may interview like a star, and be an ace at psychometric testing… but if your résumé is below-par, you’re not likely to even get to those next stages.

At Nine2Three, we see many résumé’s each and every day. Some, which are fantastic, and others that could use a touch-up. Today we’re going to share with some tips on how to make your résumé stand out from the crowd, and land you the job of your dreams.

Tip 1: Keep It Simple
Ensure your résumé is easy to read by selecting a font such as Arial or Calibri. Stick to black, and use size 11. Bold your headings and ensure everything flows smoothly. Also remember, white space – don’t have too little, or too much. Too little and your résumé will be cluttered; too much and you may be missing important selling points.

Tip 2: Spell-Check
You wouldn’t believe how many résumé’s we see containing typos. Many even occur in the first paragraph, some people even spelling their own name wrong. When an employer finds a typo in your résumé, it will more than likely end up straight in the bin. Proof-read your résumé and get your friends and family to take a look to, because there is nothing worse than a lack of attention-to-detail.

Tip 3: Responsibilities and Achievements
Ensure you don’t go overboard when listing your responsibilities for each role you have held. Meaningless points such as ‘attended staff meetings’ do nothing to make you stand out from the crowd. List specific achievements that made you valuable to the company. This will show your next employer the value you can bring to their company.

Tip 4: Tailor Your Résumé
Ensure you structure your résumé to make it relevant to each role that you apply for. If you are going for a sales role, ensure you clearly highlight your relevant sales experience, as opposed to administrative experience, for example.

These are just a few tips to help make your résumé stand out. Remember, there is no right or wrong way to write your résumé, but doing simple things such as the ones listed, will put you at the front of the competition. If you’re still struggling, Nine2Three also offers a ‘Complete Résumé Makeover’ service, to help you get ahead.
