7AugLooking to Hire? Look at Both Ends of the Spectrum!

Posted on 7/08/2014 by Nine2Three

Australia has some problems as we all know that are going to impact our economy continually for the next decade or so. In response,  the government is looking at a number of ways to encourage employers to employ those with the most difficulties finding work.

That is; the young and the not so young!  Both ends of the population spectrum make up a proportionally large percentage of the unemployed.

Youth unemployment is a major issue in Australia, so to encourage you to look at school leavers or new job seekers, the government will offer wage subsidies if you take on workers in this demographic that have been out of work for more than 12 months. The focus is on getting the under 30 demographic working. Tough on the youngsters certainly, with a six month wait for welfare and a work for the dole system, but the mantra the government are using is, you need to be ‘earning or learning’.

However we do need to get our amazing young people engaged and working. We are currently seeing an increase in calls for junior staff members and are happy to support this.

At the other end of the spectrum, with more and more Baby Boomers being retrenched, retiring or semi retiring and facing an increase in the pension age to 70, we need to look at ways to keep older Australians and the fabulous skills and knowledge they possess in the workforce for longer.

Society is changing and Australians need to be active members of the workforce for longer.

I recall in the GFC, one associate telling me a joke – What is the definition of liquidity? What you feel when you look at your superannuation and realise that you will have to live on that for the rest of your life!

The Government will support business owners who employ mature age employees (over the age of 50) with a payment of $10,000 across two years to the employer. The worker has to have been on the dole for six months before starting work with you.

But a greater bonus to the employer is of course, the skills and experience that a mature  person brings into your business. Not only work skills, but life and situational skills. These have been honed through experience over many years and means that this person already knows how to act in a variety of situations as they have already lived through them!

So look at the young and the more mature for a truly great multigenerational workplace. It works wonders and may just entitle you to some government assistance.
