If you can work at a job you love, with people you enjoy being with, your life will be richer and happier! We all need to pay the bills, so obviously remuneration plays a big part in how people feel about their jobs. But beyond that, everyone wants to feel that they contribute at work, are valued and their combined efforts make something good happen !
 
There are many initiatives out there to ‘pay it forward’ ‘give back’ and generally to return something good to society or other people. When we do these types of things, we feel good, and we certainly feel good if we are on the receiving end of someone’s generosity.
 
Developing other people in your workplace, particularity young people, is one of the most worthwhile things that you can do. Having a positive input into the lives of young people, helping them to find their strength, placing them on a path to enhance their future and watching as they develop and grow into young professionals is very rewarding.
 
However if you are doing this in your workplace, the rewards are magnified. The young person develops with the business and so the business gains the positives from the young persons achievements.
 
Smart businesses develop young people as future leaders within their own business. They understand, that if they put the time and effort  in now, they will be repaid in the future. Yes, young people will move on, they have to stretch their wings and experience new workplaces. Understand that and work with it.
 
However young people do not stay young forever. They grow older, need stability, perhaps to be close to home or a less stressful environment. If you are smart, you have kept a relationship with them over these years, there is nothing stopping you from doing a little of your own headhunting and giving them a call.
 
It is my experience that young people never forget those that helped and mentored them along the road and if coupled with respect, they may well be keen to work with you again later in life. 
 
Big businesses call this ‘Our Alumni’. That’s why they keep in contact with people. People don’t change that much – once a fabulous young worker, will always have the same work ethic, just their priorities may change.
 
We call it the N2T Grad Plan!
 
Apart from all the positive business reasons to develop young people, the personal reward is still the best. 
 
While attending  a stage show in Sydney a young woman came up to me and called me by name. I did not recognise her, but she told me ‘you taught me when I was 14 and I was going through a really bad stage. I was self conscious and had very low self esteem. I always wanted to meet you again and tell you how much you did for me at that time in my life. You gave me so much confidence and really helped me through some difficult times. I always wanted to thank you’.
 
To have helped another human along their path and developed them in some way … that’s all the reward I need.
